RAÚL MONSALVE Y LOS FORAJIDOS
Raul Monsalve is a ferryman. Originally from Caracas, where he delved deep into his cultural heritage, Raul Monsalve moved to London in the early 2010s, where he immersed himself in psychedelia and the English melting pot, notably with The Heliocentrics & Orlando Julius. He has been based in Paris for the past 10 years, where he continues to explore the links between ancestral and contemporary trances, with music as a liberating force for mind and body.
Powerful Venezuelan rhythms and traditional songs intermingle with spiritual and futuristic jazz, psychedelic funk, experimental electronica and Afrobeat. Raul Monsalve draws inspiration from the African and indigenous traditions of Venezuela, from the funky futurism of George Clinton to Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi period, from Jeff Parker to the collections of the Nyege Nyege Tapes.
After the highly acclaimed debut album Bichos in 2020, Raúl Monsalve y Los Forajidos invite us to the dawn of a new day with SOL, an album conceived as a ceremony of transformation. Echoing Venezuela’s vibrant St. John the Baptist celebrations, SOL celebrates and invokes renewal, energy, resilience and spiritual freedom. It also pays tribute to the Afro-Venezuelan ancestors who resisted oppression through music, dance and unity.

Parution 21 mars 25
The album features an array of impeccable artists from the music scene; British artist and producer Emanative, Congolese guitarist and former member of Fela Kuti’s Egypt 80, Kiala Nzavotunga, and with production by Malcolm Catto of The Heliocentrics, frequent collaborator with Madlib and Quantic, as well as Yann Jankielewicz former musical director of Tony Allen’s band.
Born in Venezuela, Monsalve – who cut his teeth playing post-rock, free-funk, Afro-Venezuelan and Latin music in Caracas – made it his mission to explore the complex heritage of his homeland and learned percussion mastery in the barrio of Sarria in Caracas.
He then moved to London, exploring the English scene armed with his Fender Precision. Close to The Heliocentrics family, he became bassist on The Heliocentrics & Orlando Julius tour.
Raul moved to Paris in 2015. He recreated his own entity Raul Monsalve y los Forajidos with musician friends from the Venezuelan and Colombian communities, juggling electric instruments and traditional percussion in their feverish performances. They include Venezuelan singer Ly Bonilla, Edgar Bonilla on synthesizers, Andrés Vela on saxophone and Mario Orsinet on drums.
Drawing on his experiences as a musician with highlife master Orlando Julius, psychedelic funk outfit The Heliocentrics and Fela Kuti's Afrika 70, the bassist and bandleader has built a universal, futuristic musical discourse by capturing the richness and energy of the folklore of the coastal region of Barlovento.”
Raúl Monsalve has teamed up with drummer-producer Malcolm Catto and an explosive cocktail of Venezuelan, Parisian and London-based musicians. Together, they have created a militant work, using animal metaphors (mosquito, butterfly, pig...) to denounce dubious politicians, pay tribute to the maestros of Afro-Latin culture and restore the power of rebellion and the strength of friendship to their rightful place.
