BaRcoDE : Ben Wendel / Joel Ross / Simon Moullier / Patricia Brennan / Juan Diego Villalobos

One saxophone, four vibraphonists/percussionists for a true OMNI, drawing inspiration from chamber music, electroacoustic experimentation, and the universality of the vibraphone, ranging from experimental music to African percussion music and resolutely virtuoso jazz. Five masters brought together; an obvious pleasure in playing together, constant emulation, and a constant celebration of musical diversity.

“With his warm soundscape and inimitable improvisations, Californian Ben Wendel has established himself as one of the most influential jazz saxophonists. In the shadow of the success of the group Kneebody, he has built his own career: from being a highly sought-after sideman for Prince and Snoop Dogg to producing his own projects (All One feat. Tigran Hamasyan, José James, Terence Blanchard, Cécile Mc Lorin Salvant…/ High Heart feat. Shaï Maestro, Nate Wood, Michael Mayo, Joe Sanders), he has become a key figure in contemporary jazz.

Commissioned by the Jazz Gallery in New York, BaRcoDe brings together four of the most innovative voices in vibraphone and contemporary percussion. Joel Ross, a Blue Note artist, has redefined the vibraphone with acclaimed albums such as KingMaker and The Parable of the Poet, and is widely considered one of the most expressive improvisers of his generation. Simon Moullier, praised by Quincy Jones and Herbie Hancock and known for his custom quarter-tone vibraphone, expands the instrument’s vocabulary with global idioms and electronics.

Patricia Brennan is renowned for her exploratory solo work and collaborations with avant-garde leaders such as Mary Halvorson and John Zorn, using extended techniques and real-time processing to reinvent the role of the vibraphone. Born in Venezuela, Juan Diego Villalobos draws inspiration from Afro-Caribbean traditions and experimental electronics, bringing a folkloric and futuristic energy to the ensemble’s sound.
